Logan Martin Lake starts at the discharge of H. Neely Henry Dam in Calhoun county in a small town called Ohatchee, Alabama (near the site of what was lock 3 of the Coosa River )and extends south to Logan Martin Dam near an even smaller town Vincent Alabama. The Coosa River is the primary source for several lakes including Logan Martin, there are however numerous smaller streams which also flow into the lake system. The main flow of the water is from the north to the south along a some what meandering course. (A meander in most cases is a bend in a sinuous watercourse. A meander is formed when the moving water in a stream or creek erodes the outer banks and widens its valley) The Coosa River starts in the Appalachian Mountains and ends as you might say as does those of Logan Martin Lake, eventually into Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico through the Alabama River and Mobile River.
Logan Martin Lake is a run-of-the-river reservoir through its upper reaches. From the location of Lock 4 up around Lincoln and Riverside to the I-20 bridge, the Coosa River (or what is now called Logan Martin) expands, but still follows and is confined to the original course. From the I-20 bridge to the Logan Martin Dam which is approximately 23 miles, the lake does expand to a widths greater than the original river channel, with very large areas of open deep water and many small to large sized sloughs, coves and creeks. Also another interesting fact is at the Logan Martin Lake dam the maximum depth is 69 feet.
Logan Martin Lake is situated in what is called the Northern Piedmont Physio graphic Province of Alabama, which is further characterized by generally low ridges at the southern reach of the Appalachian Mountains. The lake reservoir lies mostly within the Ordovician Knox Group
There are a number of aquatic species which make their home in Logan Martin Lake. Every year there are several local and national fishing tournaments which are held on the lake. Logan Martin Lake has also played host to several championship events of the FLW Outdoors Tour and the Bassmaster Classic in 1992, 1993, and 1997.There are large amounts of both large mouth and spotted bass which inhabit the lake, as well as striped bass(which in my opinion is best to fish at the dam when the gates open) , white bass, hybrid bass, crappie, catfish , bream, drum, carp, and gar. You can see more at the Wiki site.
The Coosa River for as far back as anyone can remember was used for steamship navigation which took ships as far north as Rome GA. An extensive series of locks allowed passage along shoals and ledges in the river. Steamships were eventually replaced by roads and railroads, so the Coosa River system was selected to assist prosperity once again and was selected for a large dam system to provide hydro-power, flood control, and recreation. The Logan Martin Dam namesake comes from William Logan Martin, Jr., who was a judge and Attorney General in Alabama in the early 20th century.
Logan Martin Lake contributes millions annually to the local communities like Pell City, Lincoln, and Talladega in the form of increased property values, recreational visitors and tourist at local businesses, and the low-cost hydro-power helps Alabamians all over the state.
